Tallow FAQ & Ingredient Education

Tallow FAQ & Ingredient Education

New to tallow skincare? You're not alone. We get a lot of great questions from curious shoppers, and we love answering them. Below you'll find honest, straightforward answers to the most common things people wonder before trying our products for the first time.

What Is Grass-Fed Tallow?

Tallow is rendered beef fat — specifically the fat that surrounds the organs (called suet). When sourced from grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle, it's a nutrient-dense ingredient that has been used in skincare for centuries, long before synthetic moisturizers existed.

Grass-fed tallow is rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and stearic acid — all of which support healthy, resilient skin. Its fatty acid profile closely mirrors the natural oils our skin produces, which is why it absorbs so beautifully.

Won't Tallow Make My Skin Greasy?

This is the #1 question we get — and we totally understand the hesitation. The short answer: no, not if you use the right amount.

Because tallow is biocompatible with your skin's natural sebum, it absorbs quickly and deeply rather than sitting on the surface. A little goes a long way. We recommend starting with a pea-sized amount, warming it between your fingers, and pressing it gently into clean skin. Most people are surprised by how non-greasy it feels.

Will It Clog My Pores or Cause Breakouts?

Tallow has a comedogenic rating of 2 (on a scale of 0–5), which means it's considered low to moderately low risk for clogging pores — similar to many plant-based oils commonly used in skincare.

Many of our customers with acne-prone skin have actually found that tallow helps balance their skin over time, rather than triggering breakouts. That said, everyone's skin is different. If you're acne-prone, we suggest patch-testing on a small area first and introducing it slowly into your routine.

Is Tallow Good for Sensitive Skin?

Yes — tallow is one of the most gentle, skin-compatible ingredients available. Because it's free from synthetic fragrances, preservatives, and harsh chemicals, it's often well-tolerated by people with eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, and other sensitive skin conditions.

Our formulas are intentionally simple. We believe fewer ingredients means fewer things to react to. If you have known allergies or sensitivities, always check the full ingredient list for each product and consult your dermatologist if needed.

How Does Tallow Compare to Conventional Moisturizers?

Most conventional moisturizers are water-based and rely on emulsifiers, preservatives, and synthetic ingredients to create a smooth texture. They can feel hydrating initially, but many contain ingredients that may irritate sensitive skin or disrupt the skin barrier over time.

Tallow, by contrast, is a single whole-food ingredient (or blended with a few clean botanicals in our case). It nourishes the skin barrier rather than just coating it, and it doesn't require a long list of additives to stay stable or feel good on the skin.

Does Tallow Have a Smell?

Pure tallow has a very mild, subtle scent — some describe it as faintly earthy or neutral. Our products are crafted to minimize any noticeable scent, and many of our formulas include light botanicals or essential oils that complement the tallow beautifully.

If you're sensitive to scent, our unscented options are a great starting point.

How Do I Use Tallow Balm?

It's simple:

  1. Start with clean, slightly damp skin — moisture helps the balm absorb even better.
  2. Scoop a small amount (pea-sized for the face, a bit more for the body) and warm it between your fingertips.
  3. Press and massage gently into skin using upward motions.
  4. Allow a minute or two to absorb before applying makeup or going to bed.

Tallow balm can be used as a daily moisturizer, a targeted treatment for dry patches, a lip balm, a cuticle treatment, or even a light hair serum for flyaways. It's wonderfully versatile.

Where Do You Source Your Tallow?

We source our tallow from grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle raised on regenerative farms in the United States. We believe that what goes into our products matters — for your skin and for the planet.

Regenerative agriculture practices help restore soil health, support biodiversity, and reduce the environmental footprint of animal agriculture. By choosing grass-fed tallow, we're supporting a food system that works with nature rather than against it.

Is Tallow Ethical?

We understand this is an important question for many shoppers. Our tallow is a byproduct of the beef industry — meaning it comes from animals that were raised for food, and we're using a part of the animal that would otherwise go to waste. We see this as a form of whole-animal respect and resourcefulness.

We're committed to sourcing only from farms with high animal welfare standards, and we're always happy to share more about our supply chain if you'd like to know more. Feel free to reach out.
